A new mattress? Read this before you buy
Before you invest in a new mattress: read what it does and doesn’t solve for your back and your sleep, and why, with ANDUFIT, a massage module under your mattress, you might simply keep your current mattress.
A stiff back or a restless night, and the mattress gets the blame
You get up with a stiff back, or you sleep restlessly and don’t feel rested. The mattress seems the logical culprit. You look around in shops and online, and see prices from €500 to over €5,000.
That is a big purchase, made in the hope of waking up differently. Sometimes a new mattress really is the answer. Often it isn’t. Below you can read how to tell the difference, what research says about the right mattress, and what a mattress can never do.
When a new mattress does make sense
A mattress wears out. If you recognise several of these signs, replacing it is a good idea:
- Your mattress is more than 8 to 10 years old. By then it has lost much of its support.
- You can see or feel a dip. Where you lie, the mattress has sagged.
- You sleep better in a hotel. Then it is probably down to your own bed.
- You wake up because you are uncomfortable. You turn over often, looking for a good position.
Recognise little or none of this, but still get up with a stiff back or don’t feel rested? Then it is probably not your mattress, and a new one won’t solve it either.
Firmer isn’t better: what research says
For a long time, a firm mattress was thought to be best for your back. Research shows something different.
of people with back complaints had less discomfort in bed after 90 days on a medium-firm mattress. On a firm mattress it was 40%. 313 adults took part. Kovacs et al., The Lancet, 2003
A large review of 39 studies came to the same conclusion: a medium-firm mattress is best for comfort, sleep quality and the alignment of your back. And price says little about that. An expensive mattress is not automatically better for your back or your sleep.
What a mattress can’t do
Even the best mattress is passive. It supports you, but does nothing else. And that is the problem for anyone who gets up with a stiff back or wakes up tired.
For your back stiffness
Muscles that are already tense when you lie down stay tense. You lie almost still for eight hours, blood flow to your back muscles slows, and when you get up your back feels stiff. On any mattress.
For your sleep depth
You take the tension of the day to bed with you. If you lie down tense, you stay longer in light sleep, however good the mattress.
So a mattress is a good foundation, but it doesn’t take the tension out of your body. For that you need something that actively relaxes, at the moment it matters: when you lie down and before you get up.

The solution
Upgrade your bed with massage, for a relaxed back and a deep sleep
ANDUFIT is a massage module with 20 programmes that you slide under your mattress or topper. Gentle, low-frequency vibrations relax your body, exactly where a mattress falls short.
Fits under mattress or topper
Only 7 cm high
How it works
Gentle, low-frequency Andullation® vibrations travel through the mattress via seven motors to five body zones, from the shoulders to the calves. They help your muscles relax and bring your body to rest. The same technology is also used in physiotherapy.
Andullation® technology, backed by science
Andullation® was developed in Germany together with universities, and is also used in physiotherapy. The technology has also been studied independently.
A peer-reviewed study, published on PubMed, followed 50 people who received five half-hour andullation massages. The researchers measured, before and after, how participants experienced pain, how they felt and how much pressure their lower back could tolerate.
What changed after five sessions
Study of 50 people without a control group, published on PubMed. ANDUFIT is not a medical device and does not promise a cure. If complaints persist, please consult your doctor.
And for your sleep? In a survey of its own users, 82% said they fall asleep more easily and 79% that they wake up more rested.
“I used to wake up several times a night. Now I sleep through until the alarm, hard to believe.”
“My mind was constantly running at full speed. After twenty minutes I’m simply calm and fall asleep.”
Together in bed, each with your own massage
Share your bed? Then each of you has your own module, each with 20 programmes. You choose Back, your partner Falling asleep. A single mattress can’t do that.
Two modules side by side, each with 20 programmes.
Programme 19, Falling asleep, 15 minutes. Your body relaxes and you fall asleep without the tension of the day.
Programme 8, Back, 15 minutes, before you even get up. Your back loosens up while you are still lying down.
